4 Simple Questions

No matter how you build a team, around great work, talented people, an awesome environment…. people leave.
You are happy for them; if you did your job right, your friends are running to something great and not running from something awful (you?). But this does sting, and it is vitally important for you to understand why they are leaving and accept any feedback with humility and learn from it.
It was a hard week. I was lamenting this fact of seeing good friends leave to a new friend Mike Qualley.
Mike shared with me 4 questions that he had developed over many years of leading talented technical teams. Questions that you should be asking your team, and you should ask yourself.
The answers will point out things that need attention, and things that are going well. The answers can help you clarify any new opportunities you are considering, and help you address your current situation. If your team knows the questions they can help diffuse difficult discussions (Elwin, I am having problem with #3, ).
They aren’t magic, but they do foster a magical conversation.
Here they are: 4 simple questions.
  1. What do I need to do to be successful?
  2. Do I have a future?
  3. What is my relationship with my Direct Management?
  4. Is this a fair and equitable place?
Your answers might surprise you.
Thanks Mike!
