BUY! SELL! HOLD!
Yelled by a trader in a wall street trading pit?
Nope.. this was said by a Tech leader looking over his systems portfolio.
Back in 2014 Bob Dvorak introduced me to this approach, which he called KillerIT. http://bit.ly/2SDdgOx
This approach is a great way to frame a conversation around resourcing and future strategy.
The idea is by thinking like a data driven stock broker, Tech Leaders can better prioritize and cull unnecessary assets and bring focus to what will move the business forward.
Some IT orgs allocate more than 80% to simply ‘run the business’, investment in new digital capabilities can easily get lost or starved. How can one pivot, carrying such a legacy ‘lights on’ load?
Ranking each IT resource/capability/product/service in ones portfolio as Buy/Hold/Sell, using IT and business metrics forces the business and IT unify around the things that matter most.
Securing Time and Money for the Valuable by Eliminating Valueless
"Buy" refers to applications needed to grow the business; "hold" reflects necessary applications that don’t require investment beyond their value; and "sell" points to apps that deplete resources and budgets without contributing to the organization.
