Compensation Pie

It isn't just about the money,
Consider the “total pie of compensation" when making decisions for yourself or when advising others.

I divide my pie into three parts:
• Financial
• Challenge
• Environment

The parts affect each other.
Work at a university, for example, the financial slice might be small, but the environment may be great (and challenge could be decent)

A consultant might find the financial slice being huge, the challenge second (you get to work on cool problems) but the environment slice might be small (perhaps you are traveling a ton and live out of a suitcase)

At different times of your life, you will weigh the parts differently.

As a leader you can use the pie to help you compete. Perhaps you can’t pay as aggressively as your competitors. Create the right environment and amazing people may take a pay cut to work with you. Empower people with great problems to solve at scale, and you’ll attract problem solvers.

For myself, I consider very carefully the value of each slice at the current point of my life, when weighing out a compensation decision.
