The 8th S - Space

I always thought the McKinsey 7-S’ missed one ‘S’
Space

The 1982 book by Tom Peters, and Robert Waterman, In search of Excellence; The 7-S framework is still an important tool to understand interrelationships, of an organization. Especially helpful when one is affecting change in an org: restructuring, new systems, leadership change, merger etc. The 7-S’s are defined as hard elements (Strategy, Structure, Systems) and soft elements (Shared Values, Skills, Style, Staff)

I always thought they missed one S, Space.

Space, the physical environment we work in directly effects our culture, work product, emotional state, and moral. It is not a one sized fit all proposition (even though lately everyone thinks moving to an open floor plan will make one more innovative and agile )

I have advocated for:
Open, closed, bullpens, split, private office layouts
Gender neutral bathrooms
Lactation rooms
Quiet rooms
Rooms permanently sched around call to prayer times
Shared Kitchens

Advocating for the right kind of space for your team's needs is very hard, you will be shocked how fast your corporate antibodies will try to dispatch you; but it is worth going to the mat. Get the space right, a lot of good will follow. Looking to transform? transform your space.

Two rules:
One size doesn’t fit all.
Space is never finished, your needs will change and so will your space,
