Trip vs Journey

Are you taking a trip?
or
On a journey?

On a trip, there is an agenda, a schedule. You know almost every stop, the costs (you might have paid, upfront). Your daily experience is mostly defined. Research is done, and base expectations are set.

In contrast, a Journey, has rough milestones, a budget, a general idea of direction; but the daily details are worked out on the fly, based on budget, time, milestones and a shared set of rules.

Both are adventures.

With a Trip the restricted ambiguity, allows one to focus on the experience without the worry of the details.

The adventure is in the exploration with a Journey (within guardrails of milestones, budget, and time)

Certain types of people love Trips, and others, Journeys. (also it’s a continuum one can have more spontaneous Trips, and more defined Journeys)

A company (or industry ) in digital transformation is on a Journey, not a Trip.

Often these companies come from the Trip mindset. Their fiscal planning, risk tolerance, decision making, and values are not geared for Journeys.

The team(s) are expecting a Trip.

You have to prepare them for a Journey.
